Ajit Jogi’s full name is Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi. After the bifurcation of Madhya Pradesh, on 1 November 2000, when a separate state was created in the name of Chhattisgarh, he was elected the first Chief Minister of the state. Ajit Jogi started his career as a collector. At the same time, the then Prime Minister got in touch with Rajiv Gandhi. Around 1986, he joined Congress and entered active politics.
Born in Pendra, Bilaspur, Ajit Jogi, after studying engineering, worked first in the Indian Police Service and then in the Indian Administrative Service. Later he came into politics on the suggestion of the then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Arjun Singh.
Ajit Jogi was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1998. During this time he continued to work in different posts in Congress, while in 1998 he was elected as Lok Sabha MP from Raigad. He was also an MLA and MP. He then became the first Chief Minister of the state during the creation of Chhattisgarh State in the year 2000 and remained Chief Minister till the year 2003. The Congress was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the first elections to the state assembly in 2003.
However, Jogi’s health deteriorated after that and his political graph also declined. He continued to rebel in the party and in the end he chose his own path. Jogi formed the new party Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) in 2016 due to differences with Congress leaders in the state and was its chief. Ajit Jogi revolted from the Congress in 2016 and formed his own party called Janata Congress Chhattisgarh, while he was once the face of the Congress in the state.
