Trance Movie Review

Trance (2020) Genre: Drama / Action Direction: Anwar Rasheed Music: Jackson Vijayan Fahadh Faasil and Nazriya Fahad after Bangalore Days. The highly anticipated movie. The film depicts the life of Viju Prasad, a Motivation Trainer.

As every movie has a conflict between good and evil, trance too has its politics that is something relevant these days. For a story with a strong evil side there must be an equal and opposite good on the other side to fight the evil. But the problem is you can only see “the bad alone on stage”. Viju Prasad’s(fahadh) lengthy past is the only thing that is good until Vinayakan’s character appeared. This is where trance fails. The first thirty minutes could have been trimmed into 10 minutes. Trance is a film which proves that if a film needs to be good it must have a good script above all other stuffs. If you were the one who liked and praised Jallikkattu for its “thought & camera”, you may also praise trance. But if you belong to that group who can’t like a movie just because the director is an award winner or popular, Trance won’t work for you. You know its an Amal Neerad dop when the camera moves downwards from the ceiling. Despite of having unique thoughts and good technicians, today, filmmakers are struggling with half baked scripts. What Anwar Rasheed got from TA Shahid, Benni P Narayambalam and Anjali Menon stands above from what he got from Vincent Vadakkan.

The film portrays a group of people who are enthralled by their faith. It is the most indispensable subject in the present day. On one side it portrays those who are exploiting the veil of religion and the other who have to fall prey to its lies. The first half of the film was spectacular. The second half didn’t look so good. The sound mixing of Rasool Pookutty was excellent. Suresh Shyam’s background music and Jackson Vijayan’s music excelled. The most liked is Amal Neerad’s cinematography. Every frame in the movie was great. Fahad Fazil’s Pandu Yala is a trans. The best performance was that of Fahad. After Fahad, the best performer was Vinayakan. Gautam Menon, Soubin, Chemban Vinod, Dileesh Pothen, Nazriya and Joju Sreenath Bhasi all performed well. Trance is the director’s craft of Anwar Rasheed. Anwar Rasheed’s Trance is a satire against the use of religion as a drug to exploit the faith and use religion for its own benefit.

Anwar Rasheed makes a good come back with ‘TRANCE’ a satire movie that is fabulously rich with its technical side. He proves himself why he is still a quality craftsman by skillfully designating the technical side of his movie to the best available in Mollywood; Amal Neerad for DOP, Resool Pookutty for sound mixing, Susheen Shyam for background score. No wonder this movie turned out to be one such cinematic experience. Also a big round of applause for the director to openly criticise those spiritual leaders who deceives people in the name of religion! Other than the technical brilliance of the movie, TRANCE is a complete FaFa show. This is a role that can only be done by him and the actor continues to amaze us with his effortless way of acting. The character transforms into various mental states, Just like Jinu Joseph’s dialogue in the movie ‘if it’s acting, he should be given an award’. The casting of Dileesh Pothan, Sreenath Bhasi and Vinayakan were brilliant. Nazriya was cute and bubbly like ever before. Goutham menon was cool in his antagonist avatar. The way Amal Neerad has done the DOP makes us more excited for his Magnum Opus ‘Bilal’ which is definitely gonna coming soon, bloody soon! The Movie also talks about various relevant social issues: How one easily get deceived by some spiritual figures in the name of religion, How some innocent minds think prayers alone can cure from illenes and also the movie jumps into mental state of trance which people fall into. The only downfall in the movie is that the second half is not as captivating or engaging as the first half is, also the ending did come as a cliche one. Trance may not be that perfect, but it’s definitely trying to push the boundaries in terms of choosing themes.

First let me break the illusions by few reviews stating the film as something ‘half baked’ and ‘badly concluded’ . It’s just that the ‘pill’ might not have worked well for them as they were waiting with ‘checkboxes’ instead of an open mind or they might be missing the point that this pill is supposed to keep you in a state of mind where you forget everything arround and immerse in it just like the title ‘literally’ means, TRANCE. The film is an absolute masterpiece of it’s own kind and maybe the only one of it’s kind. Let’s me explain ‘why?’. For a few moments the film deals with a tragic life of a struggling ‘motivational speaker’.A normal man you could probably see in the streets daily, the pain in his heart directly communicates with us but his state of mind is still a mystery.Slowly he reaches the epitome of his tragedy and now completely breaks but he is unwilling to quit. That’s when the film’s title track opens up through a ‘Kaleidoscope’ effect, as what you are going to see further is no more normal. What would you see through a Kaleidoscope? an optical illusion of miraculous shapes, just like what trance is going to show, ‘Miracles’ but the ‘illusionary’ ones. While this Kaleidoscope spins shifting shapes between hard hitting satires on religious misleaders and overwhelmingly entertaining moments, Fahad Fazil stands right at center of focus. He gets altered physically and mentally in almost all shades possible by an actor from insanity, sin, pride, passion, weakness, badassness to absolute divinity. I haven’t seen such a challenging performance or role recently and couldn’t imagine anyone else playing it.This man is the main adrenaline unleashing ingredient of this drug while every other actors too rigidly support it’s essence in their own style especially GVM, Nazriya, Pothen and Vinayakan. Perfectly casted. Even though the concept explores a very unique socially relevant untouched premise what actually makes this drug a masterpiece is how it is ‘made to work’. They could have easily made this story as normal as any film, instead they went for an absolute ‘dope’ mode.
