Holographic technology plays with perspective and the optical effects produced by light to generate three-dimensional images for the human eye. It is not something simple and we have already seen how RED’s Hydrogen project failed. But in case the screen of a mobile phone was not enough, Looking Glass has a 32-inch panel at 8K and holographic resolution.
Looking Glass has been developing this type of screen for years. So far they have offered 8.9-inch and 15.6-inch models. The biggest leap has been made with the new 32-inch screen. They assure that it is the largest holographic screen on the market and the highest resolution that exists. Although it was revealed at CES 2020 , it is now when it goes on sale, but not for everyone.
How Looking Glass achieves the 3D effect
The idea behind the Looking Glass screens is to be able to visualize elements in three dimensions without the need for special glasses , augmented reality headsets or similar devices. To do this they use the holographic technique and their own “45-element light field” technology. With the latter, they achieve a total of 45 different perspectives of the object to be shown in three dimensions and project them on the screen at the same time to create the 3D effect.
Looking Glass promises that several people can see an object on the screen at the same time from different perspectives and differently thanks to this montage with 45 images . All this without requiring any type of device, just the eyes as with a normal screen.
Going back a bit to the 8K screen, we are facing a resolution of 7,680 by 4,320 pixels on a 32-inch panel with an aspect ratio of 16: 9. They comment that the scenes are updated to a 60 Hz refresh and allows a viewing angle between 40 and 50 degrees for around up to 12 people.
The screen is designed for professional environments where you work with elements in three dimensions . The brand indicates as an example research in medicine, advertising stands or video game development. Speaking precisely of video games, it is compatible with the Unity SDK, Unreal Engine, Holoplay.js and other platforms.
Its price remains the great unknown. Despite the fact that the brand warns that it is already on sale, they have not wanted to reveal at what price it does. Instead it encourages companies to contact them directly to purchase the display. To put it in context, the 8.9 “screen costs about $ 600 and the 15.6” screen can go up to $ 6,000. If the Looking Glass 8K costs more than 20,000 euros, it would be no surprise.
