Shikara: A Love Letter From Kashmir Movie Review
Shooting of a movie called ‘Love in Kashmir’ is going on. The director is taking retakes repeatedly for a perfect scene. Because the two locals, who have been selected from the crowd during the shooting, are not able to act properly to be couple. During the shoot-reshoot of the scene, both of them begin to grow in love and then both get married. All this happens in the first few minutes of ‘Shikara’ movie. We know that the movie is not going to focus on love story. Although the tag line of the movie is-
When only the haters are left, then love is your only weapon!
And while the movie swings between love and hatreds, where the director’s hand is fully absorbed in portraying hatreds, the love that is there seems to be old school, clean and very much a film.
‘Shikara’ is the story of displaced Kashmiri Pandits. But since it is a film, not a documentary, the film also has a story. Love story of a Kashmiri Pandit girl named Shanti Dhar and a Kashmiri Pandit boy named Shiv Kumar Dhar. Long love story over 30 years. Starting from 1985 to 2018.
Instead of knowing whether the movie is good or bad, mention some problems related to the movie. In this, we will talk about both good and bad aspects related to the movie.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s problem
The movie has been produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra in association with Fox Star Studios. Vidhu Vinod Chopra has directed the movie. He has also seen the department of its editing. He has also written it, together with Rahul Pandita and Abhijat Joshi. That is, if there is any definition of a dream project, then ‘Shikara’ can be called Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s dream project.
Suketu Mehta has a book ‘Maximum city: Bombay lost and found’. In this book Suketu writes about Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the director of ‘Shikara’ –
Vidhu wants to become an Oscar-winning and well-earned director at the same time, this is his biggest drawback. In this round, they neither become fully artistic nor are they fully commercialized.
‘1942 A Love Story’, ‘Mission Kashmir’ and now his ‘Shikara’ also fit Suketu’s point. Looking at the Kashmiri Pandita running in the back of a truck filled with tomatoes in a large Refugee camp, it seems that Vidhu would want to make a bold film. But hundreds of buses filled with Kashmiri Pandits deny Vidhu’s intentions. That is when a family removes their cow’s calf midway.
Just then Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s fear emerges on the big screen. Fear of ticket window.
Seeing the innocence of lead actress Saadia, you remember Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Closer’ and Neha’s character in it, which was played by Shabana Raza (Neha Bajpai). Sadia’s acting and expressions are so natural that this role of Shanti Dhar has the ability to typecast them. If a starkid does not debut this year, then this year she can take home several prizes in the Best Debut category.
In one scene, Shiva’s strange friend Latif asks him to go to ‘India’. It is not surprising that the friend is saying this, but it is on this that Shiva does not object that Kashmir is in India only. That is, the lead actor of ‘Shikara’ is not a rebelian, not a hero.
Adil Khan, who plays Shiva’s character, is also good acting, his long uncanny scene inside the car affects a lot. When his expressions change very slowly and tears start to dissolve as the poem ends in the background.
Documentary or feature film? Real or Fiction? Class or mass? Love Story or Disaster? The script goes awry in the process of creating a balance. At the same time, seeing the movie, it seems that it has to show Kashmir burning without blaming anyone, and this is where the script of the film itself imposes a ban on itself.
This film could have been as sensitive as ‘Hamid’ or ‘Tahaan’ or bold like ‘Dil Se’. But ‘Shikara’ looks like an ‘oil-water’ solution. You can find out where there is ‘innocence’ and where ‘boldness’.
The friendship between Latif and Shiva is shown in the beginning that it is known what will happen next. 5-10 minutes before someone’s death, they create such an atmosphere that it is known that tragedy is going to happen.
See, what happened to Kashmiri Pandits, you cannot take creative liberty in it, and therefore everything is bound to be expected. But the love story you put in could have been removed a bit from the rut.
In this way, scripts fall due to storylines. And the right task is completed due to lack of strong or emotional dialogues.
Although the movie has its own moments. It is emotional to see a thirty year old house again. Shiva-Shanti’s love is a love angle of the animated movie ‘Up’. But when you get invested in a movie. And you have to do this investment yourself, because the movie lacks that magnet
The cinematography of Kashmir, the burning sets and the silence of the large halls of the Refugee Camp are all a few of the movie’s pluses.
This is a movie of that genre, you become a bit more critical while talking about it. Because such movies make this demand themselves. Otherwise such movies are many times better than many super hit movies like ‘Race 3’, according to their content, message and treatment.
Trouble with music
The music in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s movie is one of the strongest departments. In it, a poem by Irshad Kamil has been read without music. Also, Kashmiri music has been kept pure, which looks lovely but does not climb on the tongue. If there was a fusion of songs like ‘Boomro’ from one of his previous movies here, then something good and new could be heard. The music of Sandesh Shandilya is normal.
The background music is by AR Rahman and he makes the intensity scene more intense. Like the changing tempo of the song ‘Ishq Bina Kya Jeena Yaaron’…
This movie is not good for everyone. But the few viewers for whom this is there, they also have to enter theaters with a certain mood.
How is Yun Shikara, the answer will be that how is your mind set while watching a movie?
